The new Volksware Meterware shop by artist Silke Wawro is notable for two things:
One, it sells all of it’s products by the meter.
And two, these products are made of discarded items that are already considered ‘consumped’ i.e. the Volksware Meterware carpet is a made of used clothes stitched together that is supposed to be as long as the amount of clothes one would purchase in their lifetime.

Or, the meterware seat that is a roll of second hand clothes and blackets.

Or, the more amibitious Meterware table that is a long assembly of discarded tables assembled together to form a neverending stretch. The idea is that a customer can purchase one by instructing the shop to saw off their desire length.

Twists and folds have been growing rampant in the design industry imparting an inventive edge to textile, lighting, furniture and haute couture. Integrating the Japanese fine art of origami, the designs emphasize the relationship between texture and form. The intricacy of pleats and twists impart a 3-D effect and a suggestion of restrained, deliberate flamboyance.

Anne’s appliquéd designs and concertina effect instills a contemporary edge to her cushions. Echoes of ripples and pleats abound implying a demure sense of harmony.

Anthony Dickens’ origami table is constructed from three similar flat steel legs fused together to create a tripod base. There are no bolts, pegs or fastenings holding the legs together; the leg simply joints tauten to support any weight placed on the glass surface. Easily dismantled, the interlocking design is a patented system.

Jeremy Laing’s fall/winter ‘07 collection has drawn acclaim from global fashion capitals. His mineral-hued pieces are simultaneously fluid and semi-convoluted; a fashionable contradiction (and what woman wouldn’t love to be one?). The Canadian designer’s cleverly faceted designs of twisted seams and folds flatter severe shifts.

This one’s for bibliophiles – in lieu of nifty slogans, why not opt for an entire page printed from one of the classics on your tee? It’s a surefire way to get you and those around you closer to literature (and perhaps closer to you as well). Available series of classics from And Cetera Press includes Bartleby, by Herman Melville; Ivan The Fool, by Leo Tolstoi; The Antichrist, by Friedrich W. Nietzche; The Raven, The Fall Of The House Of Usher, and The Masque Of Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe; and The Soul Of Man by Oscar Wilde.

This week’s glimpse of whats to come, comes from Richard Etter, Diana Grathwohl, and Sigmund Homolya who give us “Aware Fashion” – clothes that detect invisible communication technologies like cellphones and wifi signals, and hence also enables the wearer to sense the presence of other people.
The detection device is hidden in a detachable pocket and the fiber optics sewed into the cloth. When a mobile is near, small light spots appear on the sleeve.

American Designer Philip Madden has a solution for people who have a hard time breathing in cold weather – A scarf that takes in air around you and processes it, purifies, warms and even possibly medicate it, before releasing it front of your mouth and nose for your consumption.
Possibly a good solution for rescue workers in situations where the air is full of toxins. No word whether this will ever be released as a commercial product.

Now that everybody and their uncle can launch their own clothing line courtesy of Cafepress and a copy of Photoshop*, Its always refreshing to see some neat new low key apparel like the three below, which were designed and produced under the Thorsten Van Elten label:
Have you ever stretched your tee over your head? I know I have and I suspect so did El Ultimo, the designer. After all, where else could he have found the inspiration for his revolution tee.
Speaking of revolution, if someone ever created a Hamas inspired clothing line, this would be it. Of course, it would probably happen in the year 3000 when peace finally descends on the Middle East, and Che’s iconic face’s becomes more exposed (if it isn’t already) than the FCUK moniker.
Electric Wig decides to create a shirt for the domestically challenged – the shirt is stitched in such a way that it can be folded perfectly, hence the perfectly folded shirt. A great gift for perfectionists to give to their inferior friends and family.
I’ve seen t-shirts like these before where you could write your message or fill in the blank with a marker, so it isn’t exactly original, but the thought bubbles are a nice touch.
*Pre-emptive asterik: No offense to the designers behind these tees. I didn’t mean that their work is an amateur effort
