Chair couture – the very name bears connotations of sitting pretty or languorously laying atop luxe designs. Margaret Elman has knack for reupholstering French antique furniture by giving them a new lease of life. She creates one-of-a kind, exceptionally vibrant pieces by incorporating audacious prints in recycled polyester and organic cotton. Every fabric has a specific use for every piece of vintage furniture from classical chaise lounges to ornate chairs. The prints range from serene aquatic ripples, sepia-toned dandelion stalks and even lush, verdant patch of grass. For that consummate experience of sitting on a grassy knoll indoors, you might want to commission bergères from Elman.

The new Volksware Meterware shop by artist Silke Wawro is notable for two things:
One, it sells all of it’s products by the meter.
And two, these products are made of discarded items that are already considered ‘consumped’ i.e. the Volksware Meterware carpet is a made of used clothes stitched together that is supposed to be as long as the amount of clothes one would purchase in their lifetime.

Or, the meterware seat that is a roll of second hand clothes and blackets.

Or, the more amibitious Meterware table that is a long assembly of discarded tables assembled together to form a neverending stretch. The idea is that a customer can purchase one by instructing the shop to saw off their desire length.

The Chair of Textures stemmed from an architectural experiment called House of Textures for the Dutch Architectural Institute by Tjep. The textures relate to the application of layers and components of fantasy and fairy-tale in the construction of the chair. Add personal elements like butterflies, a ‘burning’ leg, a lost key, and we have an artistic interpretation of a basic piece of furniture; an experimental triumph of symbolism and an acute sense of detail over soul-crushing homogeneity that we constantly encounter.
Being a tea aficionado, the simple ‘pour’ detail on this saucer grabbed my eye; a perfect solution for any spillages. Additionally, the design of the cup, especially the placement of the handle, encourages thought from every action that is instinctive to us.

“A One Flower Bouquet” takes the idea of creating an arrangement of various types of flowers in a vase a step further, by dissected several gorgeous blooms and reassembled the actual pieces to form something completely new and surreal.
What do you do when your day job leaves little room for you to work on something inspirational? You do what these three did – Todd Bracher, Efe Bulus and Marc Goetz live on different continents and hardly meet each other, but they used the internet to create a jont design collaborative on the side in order to create objects that provoke new ways of thinking, such as the following:

Rain Vase: combines a vase with an umbrella in order to remind us of the vital role water as in our life

22 ways to sit is a piece of furniture that accommodates all our different moods and activities by letting us sit anyway we like on it.

Something from nothing: To22 transformed an everyday object, which is typically discarded and forgotten, into something that generates excitement and creativity by taking a few wire coat hangers and suspending them from the ceiling, one hanging from the other until they created an art installation.

Universe Ring: To22 created something nearly perfect. A continuous ring, delicately proportioned, beautifully polished and seemingly flawless. There is only one tiny imperfection. A speck, no larger than a piece of dust. At a glance, it is barely noticeable. Upon close examination, it appears intentional and more clearly defined. Only magnification reveals the actual object set within the miniature interior. It is a model of the known universe.
