The Chair of Textures stemmed from an architectural experiment called House of Textures for the Dutch Architectural Institute by Tjep. The textures relate to the application of layers and components of fantasy and fairy-tale in the construction of the chair. Add personal elements like butterflies, a ‘burning’ leg, a lost key, and we have an artistic interpretation of a basic piece of furniture; an experimental triumph of symbolism and an acute sense of detail over soul-crushing homogeneity that we constantly encounter.

Being a tea aficionado, the simple ‘pour’ detail on this saucer grabbed my eye; a perfect solution for any spillages. Additionally, the design of the cup, especially the placement of the handle, encourages thought from every action that is instinctive to us.

The Bingo Lingo seems like a simple hook-up involving cable and a light-bulb. However, the designer challenges our perception of how objects work as is apparent in the picture. The clever construction prompts double-takes and gets a dialogue going.

The Pong table

The Pong table is a dining table that doubles as a LED Pong game. The table works by integrating 2500 LEDs into the table top that shine through the corian surface. When the game is switched off, the integrated technology disappears, leaving a clean table behind.

The B-bag is a biodegradable alternative to the traditional ‘grow bag.’ A grow bag is a gardening system where a large plastic bag is filled with a year’s worth of crop i.e. tomato and is buried into the ground to grow with the bag. The B-bag functions the same way except it has a concertina structure that allows it to compress for ease of transport and at the end of the season, the entire product can be placed on the compost heap to biodegrade.

Björn Franke is an industrial designer who’s work focuses on how people explore, express and control their emotions, obsessions and fears through objects and technology. For his latest exhibit, he focuses on jealousy by creating an Imaginary Affair kit containing a set of nine devices which leave traces of such an imaginary affair. The tools leave marks on the body such as bite marks, carpet burns, bondage marks, love bites, scratches and bruises. Probes of perfume, lipstick and hair can be applied to either the body or clothes.

The project examines the world of private psychological warfare within relationships, in which obsessive behaviour and disorders surface. Rather than offering the common approach of subjecting these to restrictive cultural norms, the kit enables people to exhibit them in a most effective way.
