Nick Cave’s soundsuits are suit sculptures made from found and recycled objects that are named for the sounds made when they are worn.
The suits are Nick’s response to facing prejudice as a black male in America. As he explains, the suit is made of materials that have no value i.e. twigs and bottlecaps and thus represents his perceived view of how society sees the African American man.
And just like a quiltmaker who uses discarded clothing to reassemble into something from nothing, Cave takes wortheless materials and transforms them into valuable objects of beauty and spirit that transforms the personality of the wearer into something fantastic.
