A London based advertising agency of two has created a little controversy with their VW Polo advertisement that shows a Suicide bomber blowing himself up in a Polo:
Britain’s Media Guardian magazine reported the 20-second spot was produced by a London-based advertising duo known as Lee and Dan, who were given 40,000 British pounds, $75,000, and access to the lastest Polo model to do the shoot. The two apologized for offending people but refused to identify themselves. Reuters noted that under German law, charges can be filed against unknown persons, obliging authorities to track down the perpetrators.
The ad – which plays on the VW Polo’s tagline “small but tough” – shows a man in fatigues and a Middle Eastern keffiyeh getting in his Polo and driving to the front of a sidewalk cafe. Still in the driver’s seat, he detonates a bomb belt. A flash appears inside the car, but the vehicle does not explode. Then comes the strapline: “Polo. Small but tough.”
Volkswagen has already filed criminal charges against the makers of the video after skeptics accused them of authorizing it.

Speaking of Super Printers, Researchers at Manchester University (UK) have developed a printer able to produce human skin to help wounds heal.
Skin cells are taken from a patient’s body and are then put into a special printer ink liquid, multiplied, the wound dimension are entered into the machine and then used to print out a tailor made strip of skin, ready to be sewn on to the body.
The researchers hope to work out a way to print cells on to 3D plastic scaffolds so that they can print out bones or cartilage.

Not sure if the VersaLaser can print 3-D but it can print out objects using any number of materials like wood, plastic, fabric, paper, glass, leather, stone, ceramic and even rubber. Also, the $10,000 price tag is considerably cheaper than most 3-d printers.

Looks like the Ikea mods are in. Design group Stockwerk 3 put together an exhibition of 50 modification to the Ikea “Benjamin” stool to show how uninteresting piece of furniture can be transformed. (Click more for more pictures) We think it’s a great idea, so if you own some Ikea furniture and have modified it, send in your instructions and we’ll put together a resource on our site.
If you haven’t done it before, all you need is a jigsaw blade, sticking plasters in case of accidents and a plan.

Aint It Cool News reports from Sundance about a very interesting documentary called “Unknown White Man” about a man in a subway train who suddenly realizes that he has no idea who he is. He has a backpack with him which offers him no clue. He has no ID on him. So he turns himself into the police:
“Rupert Murray, the filmmaker, is a friend of this man (who, it turns out, is named Doug Bruce) who knew him for 10-15 years prior to his memory loss. They basically have to start their friendship all over as they become reacquainted through making the film. Doug’s memory loss actually ends up being a lot harder on his friends and family than it is on himself; after all, HE doesn’t remember what his relationships used to be like. Remarkably, he is able to shrug off a lot of issues that you would expect would come with losing your memory, and just focuses on building a new life for himself.
What I liked about this film, besides its wonderful and very unique premise, is that the director, approached this film artistically (there?s some very beautiful cinematography in it) and really conveyed the sense of this man?s terror at realizing his memory was gone, and his utter joy at rediscovering the world: he doesn?t remember what food tastes like, what music sounds like, how the waves of the sea feel on your legs, and what it?s like to be in love. While I certainly wouldn’t want to lose my memories, it seems that Doug is able to get a second chance at life without baggage, without regrets, and with a lot more introspection than he had before.
The film raises some fascinating questions: Are we simply a sum of our past experiences? Or is there something more unchanging within us, a core being, a soul (or whatever you want to call it), that will survive a complete memory wipe? Watch and decide for yourself.

This is a bit old, but I loved it so much that I’m posting – Fearless activist slash artist Fernando Orellana is combating robot stereotypes as threats to humanity with his high-tech installation, Unending Closure.
The installation consists of three robots enclosed in tall, narrow columns. Each column has a thin slit through which people can see the robots, and vice versa. When no one is nearby, the three robots appear to communicate with each other by emitting a series of calm, running-water-like sounds.
When people approach the robots, however, they react. If someone gets close, the robot that senses a person crossing its RF scan will respond with what seems like curiosity. But when viewers get too close, the robots are designed to do what could only be called freaking out.

Rebel Designer Marloes ten Bhomer likes to shake things up by breaking forms, whether it’s by introducing new materials or new methods of construction that are unfamiliar to shoe designs.
She also has her very own Shoe label named Hunt, but we don’t know whether her designs are only for her label.

Third year product design students at the Academy of Arts in Iceland were given a brief to pick an Ikea product and turn it into something that Ikea would not represent. (link) What made this all the more interesting is that while we, the rest of the world, may extol the virtues of Ikea, Its home country of Sweden would rather not. Infact, shoppers there make excuses when berated over their Ikea purchase because they are perceived as the equivalent of “buying paper towels in bulk”.

Literally. Nendo turned an old house in Tokyo into a restaurant made from a sheet of canvas. Given a small budget, the group used a 200 meter sheet of canvas and wrapped the entire house, inside and outside including the table cloth and the chair coverings.
The remaining canvas was used for cards and matchboxes as well.

Who says you need a Ferris wheel and a pet monkey named Bubbles to turn your home / private space into a surreal playground. Just get yourself a few hundred Double Bubble lamps and “plant” them around.
Designed by celebrated Finnish designer Eero Aarnio, the Double Bubble Lamp comes in three sizes, two table lamps and one sculptural standing lamp. The latest version being an outdoor version of the largest lamp. No clue as to how big it is, but if those are trees in the picture below, then you might have an idea.

Josh Rubin points us towards Chris Larson’s sculpture entitled PAUSE that combines new media meme (the idea that you can pause a motion on video) with old media (wood).
The sculpture shows the iconic Dukes of Hazzard ‘69 Charger car crashing into Ted Kaczynski’s (The Unabomber) Montana Refuge, which, given the Unabomber’s advocation against the industrial revolution (See: Unabomber Manifesto), makes for a very interesting piece. I wonder if it was intentional.
