Here’s the pitch: a tiny card, the size of a postage stamp, that stores data across 100 s of super thin layers and that not only is made of recyclable plastic but is transparent. Called the Info-Mica, you could actually see this in the market as early as 2005, initially in portable devices, but NTT believes that this could be a possible alternative to semi conductor chips that drive all applications.
Someone at NTT is definately going to get a raise for this.

The first batch will be only a gig, but NTT intends to increase its capacity to 10gbs. The cards won’t be re-writable. You will be able to write only once, however its going to be difficult to pirate because of the expensive equipment required give that it relies on holography.

Oh great, now i’ll have to buy a new player and all new NNT chips to watch the newest features of movies, haha…. I havent even replaced my VHS collection with DVDs yet, now this! Damn them! But yeah, that would mean a smaller player, and smaller =’s good in small apartments… =)

Info Mica
The equipment is a bit pricey right now but maybe we’re looking through the window at the future of storage….
